Today, April 24, we celebrate the International Day of Girls in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2011 and commemorated on the last Thursday of April. This celebration aims to encourage girls to become involved in various technological fields, making them part of their academic and professional choices, as part of a United Nations initiative to reduce the gender gap in ICT.
According to data from Women Tech Network, around 35% of the technology workforce is made up of women. In addition, female representation in leadership positions within engineering and technology areas remains very low. This disparity is also concerning in Colombia, where only about 24% of professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are women. Therefore, it is essential to create tools and spaces that foster a more inclusive future in this field.
